We have the rooftop Mach 8 low profile ACs and they are terrible noisy (my chief complaint on the whole rig). It's not the airflow, they are just mechanically noisy on the roof. I've done the fan upgrade but that just made the outside somewhat quieter. My previous Dometic Briskair's were far quieter.
Do your units have the original 6 blade fan? If so they can be upgraded to the new and much quieter 3 blade fans. The 3 blade design moves more air and is considerably more quiet that the 6 blade one.
The part number for the upgraded fan kit is 1472D5041. It includes a 3 blade fan and a bracket. The bracket keeps the exterior shroud from collapsing on the fan blade. If you get new fans be sure they are revision D. They had some others out before this revision that would self destruct.
I called the AIREXCEL technical hotline for another problem and they sent me 2 of these kits at no charge.
I did install the D version of the upgraded 3 blade fans based on an earlier post you helped me with in May - Thank you!
The replacement fans truly kicked down a lot of the noise on the outside of the unit, and almost changed the tone to a turbine sound which is also a bit annoying :) I told my daughter it sounds like the rooftop of an industrial building up there, but overall it truly is quieter outside and more considerate for the neighbors.
As far as the interior noise, I didn't notice any kind of change in the noise. It is more of a rumbling noise that air, maybe vibrating through the roof, but they are terrible. If have half a mind to replace all three with the standard height ACs like I used to have.
I will say- when all three of these are running through that single duct, it will blow the sheets off the bed! OK, part my hair anyway :)
