Not to change your plans, but I wouldn't stay in either of those two area's. The further east you go in the valley and also north of HWY83 the less barrio you will experience.
I prefer to call it local charm. Mostly good hard working, friendly family minded folks that happen to be poor and have run down homes. Lots of down home art work. (Graffiti)
The barrio takes some getting use to. Some can, and others can't. For my taste, I would recommend looking in the Harlingen area to begin with. Still has good hard working families without all of the artwork. It's centrally located in the valley, so exploring the rest of the valley would be easy.
Trick is to not book long term in the beginning, but to land somewhere and then find your niche in the valley. Everybody likes different things when it comes to areas and parks. - pawattExplorer

- pawattExplorerYou could ask to have this moved to the snowbird forum, may get more response.
- pawattExplorerJust west of Mission on Bentsen Palm Drive near Bike trails and the state park & world birding center is Bentsen Palm Village Resort, Retama Village, Americana, Bentsen Grove, Val's Country Corral, Green Gate Grove and more. Retama Village and Green Gate Grove are privately owned lots & you have to rent from the individual owners. Victoria Palms in Donna is very nice, Llano Grande in Mercedes, Casa de Valle in Alamo. There are even a couple on the beach on South Padre Island. There are so many choices. Just drive around and look. There are about 500 parks in the Valley. Don't make reservations, just get a week somewhere and look around until you find what you like. Caution some on Expressway & Business 83 have a lot of traffic noise.
- Bea_PAExplorerWe stayed in Mission last year for a week at Benson Palm Village. Our only complaint was small swimming pool otherwise nice sites and halls and friendly folks. Right beside the birding center. They give you free passes to the center. We would ride our bikes over.
- nemo45ExplorerWe stay in a nice little park in Donna, TX called Countryside Mobile Home and RV Park. It is kind of centrally located in the valley and would be a good place to stay at while you are searching the area for the place you'd like to stay all winter. There are so many places in the valley that is what you are going to have to do. The park is small, 212 sites, and doesn't have a pool. But, it is a very friendly park. They also take passport America. 956-464-3834.
- rhochnadelExplorerMission, TX has rv parks right next to the birding center.

We are going to Texas this winter and would like info. On nice Rv places in Mission and Brownsville area. We are birding in that area. Any locations would be good to park.
These two state parks are in the heart of the great birding area, Goose island State Park has work campers who are bird experts that conduct walks and talks about 4 times a week.
The Port Aransas area is also great for birding
