I agree that it's the volume of air flow that really clears the lines, not pressure. A high volume is needed to pick up and entrain the water that would otherwise remain in lower portions of the piping. Using a tank to get a higher volume is the way to go. Retired engineer here too.
That said, I always use RV antifreeze to avoid the "hope I got it all out" worries with just blowing the lines.
