I'm one of the lucky ones who don't have to put the pink stuff in the lines!
I open ALL valves on the drain lines, open all faucets & such, Open the expansion valve on the HWH, ALL water drains from the system.
Pink stuff used in the traps.
Been doing it for about 9+ years w/o issue here in COLD NH.
