Wiring a brake controller

I have a question hopefully someone can help with.

I have to wire a brake controller in our 2000 Allegro Bay Class A and I can't find an easy way to get through the dash and firewall to get the power leads to the battery. I have found a main power block fed by a 10ga wire that is for the power seat, the radio and the dash fan.

Does anyone see why I can't hook up to that power (directly to the 10ga power wire) instead of going directly to the battery? I will not be using the power seat while braking, radio is almost never on, and the fan is rarely used. Thanks.

  • Thanks for all the repies.

K Charles, yeah I realize that.

Fire Up (Scott) Yes, thank you, after many hours earlier this year I found out that our coach is one of the unlucky few that aren't pre-wired. It would have been so nice.

Daboo - thanks for that. It looks neat but already had the controller and wire purchased :)

Took me awhile, most in the rain, but I got er done.

  • In response to your question without all the other advice YES if you are positive this is a 10 gauge fed live power point.

there is also a company that manufacturers brake controlers..they require no wiring...the unit clamps onto the tow bar and use the brake light power to work..I put one on my tow dolly so I wouldn't have to run wires..might want to check it out..so easy to do..can't think of the company or website, but will try to find it and post if interested.

found the American Car Dolly Co...that sells the brake...web site is
americancardolly.com/ez-brakes/ give it a look..as I said, I had one on the tow dolly and it worked good...no hassle hook-up and easy ....

  • Mike,
Just wondering, have you by any chance looked under the dash for the complete trailer brake controller wiring? Our last coach, a '99 Fleetwood Bounder 34V on an F-53 chassis, and our present coach, an '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the C-7 330HP CAT and the Freightliner Evolution chassis are/were both pre wired for brake controllers. And, they were/are labeled as such. Many folks have found the wiring for those controllers by accident while under there working on other wiring projects. Just a thought.
