Workhorse vs. Triton Engines

X2 on the V-10.

Both are very good power plants and will get you to any point in North America with paved road access. The Ford power/torque curves peak at much higher RPM which will contribute to higher noise levels when the power is needed. The engine roar can be attenuated with of noise/heat barriers in the engine cover which some coach builders have recently started to include.



The Workhorse chassis did get a bit of a black eye with brake caliber problems that were fixed with a recall. There could still be a few rigs in the world that the recall was not performed on. Just something to be aware of.

Two identical rigs one on the Workhorse the other on the Ford, difficult choice. Ask other owners and they will normally default to brand loyalty or what's in their camp site. When we were search for a coach floor plan was first priority with the chassis being further down the list. More of a want than a need at least for myself.

how old are you looking at? if 1999 or 2000,ish. the workhorse is just a rebranded P-30/32 which was not stellar.

If you find a Workhorse W chassis with the Allison transmission, with a floor plan that you like, jump on it. The 8.1 and the Allison transmission is a difficult combination to beat, which may be why you see the prices a little higher for this combo. The facts are that both engines will outlive the coach, if properly maintained.

I have had both. From an engine perspective not a lot of difference. But I was never as comfortable driving the Workhorse as I am with the Ford.

Important to note that my Workhorse chassis was a P32 which has it's concerns with the parking brake and some front end components.

A lot depends on the year you are looking at and what your personal preference's are. I have an old 454 that develops max torque at 1800 rpms. When I first tested the V-10 I thought the engine was very noisy because it developed its max torque at a much higher rpm. The newer V-10's that I tested seemed much quieter. By 2006 the performance of both engines were similar. For me I would choose the Workhorse chassis over the Ford because of the 6 speed Allison transmission everything else being equal. The new Fords are coming out with a 6 speed also.

At the time the Workhorse was sometimes an expensive option, up to $5000. on some coaches. I had a W22 in a 2003 Mountain Aire and loved it.

As a point of reference only the Workhorse W20-W22 had the brake recall.

The Workhorse W24 has a completely different and much larger brake system and this system has been trouble free. IMHO, the W24 is the preferred Workhorse gas chassis and easily carries my 23,200# 39' motorhome anywhere.

The Allison 2100MH transmission is a MAJOR plus for the W24. The 2100MH is used in some diesel engined chassis'.
