If you were having a custom B-van built, would you consider a euro-style cassette toilet system? Why, or why not?I'm not very familiar with them. Doesn't the cassette itself, or the compartment get "gross" and need cleaning out?I can see how it could be handy, but need servicing every 3 or 4 days.

Allows you to have a toilet without the need for a black tank. If the chassis layout allowed room for a larger black tank that would be the way to go IMO. If not, then a cassette toilet is preferable to none. We had one in the pop-up years ago and the cassette comes out like a mini portable black tank that you take up to the dump station.

I had one (portable)that saved the day when my toilet drain pipe and base mount had a problem. Removed the toilet and set the cassette on two 2x4's right over the drain hole for three days waiting for a mobile repairman. Worked fine, Emptied it right down the drain. Very doable.

If you rinse the cassette with clear water after use, it stays pretty clean. 2 times are usually enough and all that comes out is clear water. The compartment itself doesn't need a lot of attention. It is a good idea to wipe it clean once in a while, but it doesn't accumulate a lot of gross-ness quickly.Typically, you need to dump about every 2 days if you are travelling as a couple.There is an issue with the cassette in that it likes to sputter a little when you use it after you have changed altitude (pressure difference). Here in Europe, many people have installed an SOG kit (link below). The kit contains a small fan that engages as soon as you move the flush lever. It vents all gases in the cassette to the outside through a carbon filter. Not only does it eliminate any sputtering - it also lets you use the cassette without any chemistry / deodorant. So you can dump the contents into any toilet along the way.Dumping itself is straightforward and just as clean (or dirty) as with a black tank - but minus any hassles with a dump hose.I wouldn't want to go back to the black tank system. There is an inexpensive option that you might consider. There are toilet seats available that snap on top of a 5 gallon bucket, just the right hight as a toilet. These use plastic bags and pouches that are disposable. It sounds a little gross but in reality it is probably more sanitary than emptying a cassette or black tank and you don't need a dump station, just a trash receptacle. We had one in a conversion van once and years ago in a travel trailer when our children were young and they worked out fine when there were no rest rooms available or at night. If you're boon docking without neighbors, you can just use it outside.Nick

I really wish that when the subject of toilets or black tanks comes up, that those with the idea to******in a bucket or trash bag would just keep quiet. It ALWAYS comes up. We get it - it's a cheap solution. But it's disgusting and fraught with potential problems.The original question was about cassette toilets. If you can't address the question, then don't post.

We had a "porta potty" in the tent trailor and now have a black tank in our AI Sprinter. I prefer dealing with the black tank which has greater capacity so I need to do it less often.

We looked at cassette toilets and went with a composting toilet. Smaller, no plumbing, minimum two weeks between dumps, no odor, rarely even needs cleaning.

At the risk offending the 'thread police', I've always thought the ideal option for the true solo B'er (especially in a compact B or mini-CVC) would be to replace the front passenger seat with a well-anchored portapotti and a set of easy-close curtains. You could even have a fancy embroidered cover for it, or a little tabletop. Just be sure the passenger's side airbag is turned off.... ;)

We use a cassette toilet,works great. Some day I would love to own a Northstar Liberty TC and they use a cassette toilet.

I'm not quite sure why you are so upset. For those who don't want a black tank, this is the third option that not everyone may be familiar with. Though I would avoid regular trash bags and use a wag-bag type system.
