Cassette Toilets

The main reason I have one is that when winter camping, I can winterize the domestic plumbing and not use it while being able to use the cassette by using RV antifreeze or WW fluid as the flushing liquid. It is nice to be able to do one's "business" in a warm camper and not have to worry about freezing the plumbing.

Plus, it is very convenient to dump.

Depends on what type of camping you do. Sounds like you liked having a black tank in your last one so you might not like a cassette toilet.

I only have a 5 gallon porta potty in my TC. But I like it much better than a black tank for my type of TC'ing. I like boondocking and trips where I only stay on one spot for a few days. I love the ease of emptying a porta potty or cassette. The new ones are very easy to empty, with the spout and vacuum release button.

Just wait - you will get a huge response here. Also check the archives... many discussions have been had about this. And you either love them or hate them, no in between. Kinda like the question "which way should the toilet paper hang?" Everyone has a major opinion about their way LOL

In closing, my next TC will have cassette. We like to winter camp as well and it's a pleasure to be able to use a porta potty or cassette without worrying about dumping a frozen black tank. With a cassette you can bring it inside and allow it to thaw out and dump it with ease. I have no problems dumping mine in a household toilet. Never had a mess or caused an issue with plumbing.

Thinking it would be nice for the camper we are going to build.For all the same reasons.When you ask rv dealers around here you only get blank stares.Not even sure where to get one.

Yup, either love em or hate em. Hated mine as the top seal never really sealed, messy when trying to remove to empty,and hard to get the water and chemical into it to begin with. Might have just been a faulty one but enough to discourage me from ever having one again. Always had real tanks and don't mind them. Then that's just me. Lots of people are very happy with them so it's strictly a personal preference.

After having a cassette, there's no way I would want a regular toilet in a camper. Soooo easy.

My cassette has been great. As mentioned, easy to dump and they can be filled with RV antifreeze and used when it's below freezing. I dump mine into my outside sewer vents but have also used the inside toilet and a campground toilet. No mess and very convenient.

Cassette toilets are not common in the US. They're more of a European thing, I think.

I've got one, but I've only used it once in the last 5 years. Dumping it was the killer for me. Sure, you can dump it in a regular toilet, but consider for a minute what you are pouring out of this thing. It is unpleasant. VERY unpleasant. No matter how much of that blue/orange/green/yellow fruity-enzyme juice you put in, it still has that wretched smell. No matter how hard careful you are, it SPLASHES too.

The Thetford 403C waste container is maybe a bit different from what you are describing. It is long with a handle and a pour spout. When you dump it in a regular toilet, flush the toilet first, then press the button on the waste container while the water is swirling down in the toilet. The contents will drain into the whirlpool, which will continue to swirl until the container is empty. No splash at all.

The smell is there, but I think black water tank dumping is no bed of roses either on the smell.

I use the 3rd option: kitty litter, Wag Bags, and a Luggable Loo. But this is sort of a backup to using the campsite's facilities.

On year 5 using a cassette toilet where we boondock/dry camp almost exclusively. The positives are that it allows you to be out in the boonies longer even though the holding tank (cassette)is generally much smaller than a regular RV black water tank.

This forces us to use less water. Besides being able to dump the portable cassette tank in any number of sewer facilities, another real plus is when there is a sani dump at a government campground and there is a long line of RV's waiting to dump and some take up to 10 minutes or more to get rid of grey,black water and fill with fresh, you can park close by, carry cassette to the drain, soon as RV has pulled their hose and are stowing it, dump cassette tank which takes 10 seconds, quick spray and then return with out interrupting anyone in the line up.
