Yellowstone 1st trip

Pastor Charlie says "If you only have the MH there are several areas that you will not be able to drive." Only you likely won't know til you're already there. A full width MH is a nightmare in certain sections. Not only is the road (built in the 1920s?) narrow but they were nice enough to border this narrow road with little 6" high stone curbs. As I remember, coming from Grand Teton, you get into trouble fast.

If you only have the MH there are several areas that you will not be able to drive.

The Corn Palace an Wall Drug are two of the biggest tourists traps I have been unfortunate to visit. I saw items in the Corn Palace from 6 different countries, a bleached cow skull was from China.

At least they admit the business was started to draw tourists to the area.

We just returned from YP and Glacier a few weeks ago. Beautiful trip. In the South Loop of YP you'll see the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, which is absolutely the most spectacular views you will see. My wife says that was the climax of the whole trip. Don't miss it. We stayed at Grizzly and loved it. We're already thinking of going back next year. Allow a minimum of 3 days to see YP if this is your first time. Then you'll know just what the next trip can include, and there will be a next time!

Making a similar trip in September - Central Florida to Mt Rushmore area and then over to Yellowstone (hopefully - thats a matter of debate right now) for a few days then home. I second Cody and the Buffalo Bill museum - I think its on a par with any of the Washington DC museums. We were there a few years back for my work, got snow (a good amount for a Flordian) on October 31st and they closed some of the roads. I can't wait to get back out there.

We were there last September and came in through the East side. We had been through the West side before, staying at West Yellowstone. This time we stayed at the Buffalo Bill State Park, which was nice even tho the reservoir is down about 25' from it's normal level. In September of last year, it was cool at night, but hot during the day. Unfortunately there were several fires south of Yellowstone, around Jackson, and we could not even see the Grand Tetons when we drove south from Yellowstone with our toad. We decided to head East from Cody and then south down to Thermopolis, WY and through Wind River Canyon scenic byway. This was a fantastic drive. All things considered, even if there were no fires and smoke obscuring the views, we prefer the West Yellowstone area more than the Eastern area. The drive from Cody to Yellowstone is nice but once you get to Yellowstone, you are faced with acres and acres of burned out forests.

I would be betting you will see snow. We were there in June a few years ago and all of our pictures of Old Faithful were in a blizzard. We stayed in Gardiner that time. We have been at Fishing Bridge, West Yellowstone, and also in Jackson Hole. Every time I go I always wonder if this is the time for it to blow up. So far every trip has been great.

Staying at Fishing Bridge will cut your daily travels by being in the park. Other than sleeping you won't spend much time at your campsite. Enjoy your stay, it's Abigail place, 70 miles around the loop.

I love that place.

One thing not mentioned is Cody, WY. Not to be missed. Come or go through cody to the east entrance. Dinner at Irma's after watching the gunfight on main street, follow that by going to the rodeo, top the evening off with some ice cream.

Time permits, the buffalo bill museum is supposed to be nice.
