Yellowstone N.P.

I've been all over the Park many times! Has anybody ever rented a helicopter to fly over Yellowstone? There's a lot of places that I would like to still see but, I'm not healthy enough to hike, If so where do I go to make it happen. I rented a helicopter one time and flew over the Badlands N.P. what a great choice I made.
  • There are helicopter tours, sort of, if you want the really big picture from on high. According to one tour operator, the NPS and FAA do not allow low altitude scenic tours by air, so the closest they can go is 2,000 feet above the ground.
  • all the info about the airport and who's there

They don't seem to mind so much when they are being medically evacuated. :)
  • There are special flight rules for the grand canyon but no such rules for yellow stone. it's just a long flight in a helo. there is an airport at west yellowstone. you might call them for advice. the manger = Jeff Kadlec phone 406-646-7631.
  • Many, many years ago when our son was attending college in Powell WY, my husband stopped in at the ranger's office to see if he was allowed to fly his small plane over the Park. He was told that he shouldn't fly over the populated areas because the tourists didn't like the noise...and by the way, he couldn't land in the Park. He asked if there was an airstrip and was told no. He told the ranger, "If that thing out in front of me stops spinning, I AM landing in the Park". Ranger was not amused.

I would imagine that if it were possible to do a chopper tour over the Park, there would already be concessionaires providing the service. People go to Yellowstone for things other than hearing noise.

This being said, there could very well be further regulations by this time.
  • I didn't think it was legal, but apparently it may be. Anyway, here is a link to a company that at least advertises them. There are probably even more - try googling for helicopter tours over Yellowstone.
