I make the same white cake with whipped topping but use Jello instead.
Make the cake in a rectangle pan
Poke holes all over the top of the cake after it has cooled
Use your favorite Jello flavor, small box, only use 1/2 the water to mix the Jello, not the full amount. Pour over the top of the cake.
Top with Whipped Topping
I use strawberry flavor and then sprinkle with those multi colored sugar sprinkles
