Anyone using a kerosene or alcohol stove in their RV?

Is anyone cooking with a kerosene or alcohol stove in their RV?

  • Heet is nothing more than methanol. It mixes with water in fuel and in turn that mixture will mix with gas. The mixture of Heet and water won't burn, but it will when it's part of the fuel.
Alcohol can be harder to "start" in cold weather then other fuels because of its higher flash point, 52F vs -45F for gasoline. If that's pertinent?
  • We have an Origo 2 burner non-pressurized alcohol stove on our boat. It works very well and is very safe. We use it extensively when on multi week boating vacations. Have had it for more than 20 years.

    Nope.

Alcohol and water are co-soluble; putting enough water on an alcohol fire dilutes the alcohol to the point where it won't burn.

What do you think about the old stainless steel Origo non-pressurized alcohol stoves?
  • Alcohol stoves can't put out the maximum heat heat that a petroleum stove can, but it only means they can take a little longer. I have a friend who uses one river camping and it works fine. The fuel is cheap, the fumes aren't bad and the vapor doesn't sink and explode when lit.
The distribution of the vapor is why they are used on boats, that and the fact that alcohol mixes with water. No explosive fumes in the bilge from a stove is a good thing.

I should add that fuel is pretty cheap at Lowes or Home Depot. My friends stove is a Trangia which seems to be an accepted back packing stove.
  • Hi,

Alcohol stoves are excellent for making a wonderful fluffy omelet. You do have to be patient.
  • The flame tmperature on an alcohol stove is too low to do any serious cooking.

Its only redeeming virtue is: "the alcohol fire can be put out with water".
  • We have alcohol stove in our boat. I lit it once to see if it worked. I wanted to use it for fresh lobster while still on the reef. I didn't like the thought of, on the ocean, 5 miles out, and fire. I didn't like that you can hardly see the flame, never re lit it.
