- 2112Explorer IIKrogers here in Texas have small end bone-in prime ribs for $4.88/lb. I bought a 16 pounder this weekend and cut it up into ten 1 1/2" steaks. I'm the only meat eater in the house so I'll be eating on this for some time.
- Big_KatunaExplorer IIThen why doesn't Publix call it Prime Rib in their ad?
I understand that many people call it prime rib but that is the colloquial term.
The accurate term is Standing Rib Roast prefaced by grade.
Here is a clip from Allrecipes and you are correct; many sites say the same thing.

Just FYI - Right now, Publix down here in Florida has prime rib on sale for either $7 or $8 per pound - don't remember which.
Publix has USDA Choice Greenwise Angus Standing Rib Roast for $8.99/#
Their USDA Choice standing rib roast is $6.99.
They don't have any Prime Rib.
Prime rib does not have to be USDA Prime graded beef.
From Wikipedia - "A standing rib roast, also known as prime rib, is a cut of beef from the primal rib, one of the nine primal cuts of beef. While the entire rib section comprises ribs six through 12, a standing rib roast may contain anywhere from two to seven ribs.
While often referred to as "prime rib", the USDA does not require the cut to be derived from USDA Prime grade beef."
If you do the Google thing, you will find many other sites which state the same thing. - NYCgrrlExplorer

Doesn't a standing beef roast include the prime rib cut?
Best local price for prime rib (not sure if it's Prime or Choice but suspect Choice which is still good) is 9.99/lb @ Stew Leonard's. - Big_KatunaExplorer II

- garmpExplorer IIWell ya talked me into it. The local Grocery store had standing rib roast on sale and just had to buy one. Temps here this morning were in the single digits rising to the teens, but Wednesday, suppose to be in the 40's. Gonna throw that puppy on the pellet grill, follow hints on this thread and see what happens.
After all is it isn't edible, well that's why God created White Castle (Burger Doodle)! - magnusfideExplorer II

New Year's Eve means fish and seafood to counteract all the rich and heavier protein my family eats between the end of November and most of December. Still, nothing wrong with a nice piece of beef for Hanakuah or Christmas and with that and this thread in mind I decided to check my freezer. Found two lower rib cuts and will roast them and bring to my Big Sister's Christmas Day dinner as an additional meat. She's hosting 26 guests so I'm sure it'll be welcome.
I know Big Sis will welcome them! - NYCgrrlExplorerNew Year's Eve means fish and seafood to counteract all the rich and heavier protein my family eats between the end of November and most of December. - mowinExplorerI may have to rethink my New year's Eve menu. Was planning on a 12# brisket, but I haven't done a PR in a few weeks.
Got a 14lb'er in the freezer, now to convince the wife. She loves brisket. Lol
