Christmas list ideas for the kitchen?

We are preparing to fulltime this spring and I'm looking for a handful of the most useful items that cost under $30 to put on my Christmas list. How about a collapsible salad spinner? Collapsible bowls etc? Does anyone use these things? Other suggestions? Thanks!

  • Pizza stone on floor of oven---metal tray just above burner (we use a 12" X 12" unglazed tera cotta tile. Cheaper than a real pizza stone---same affect)

    As for dishes......
We use the same as we did in S&B before hitting the road (corelle, glass tumblers, mugs and CHINA) Just because you FT and travel doesn't mean special dishes or paper plates. We do use paper plates for lunches but dinner time----plates!
Pot/pans.....two different sizes skillets, small sauce pan, large pot on one very large skillet for one dish meals.
Couple of baking dishes, a colander and a small sheet pan

Gadgets......whisk, spatula, slotted spoon, knife hone
    Regular utensils

    Crook pot/slow cooker
    Coffee pot
    toaster

More is less when it comes to FTng :B
  • I am curious. When you use the pizza stone for temperature control do you set it on the bottom of the oven or on one of the metal grates and set the pans on top of it? Good idea to wrap it in foil or not?
  • I use regular kitchen items and took my good things from my kitchen with me. The only thing I purchased specifically for the RV was a new coffeepot that was black to go with the other appliances, and I purchased a 2 slice toaster instead of taking the bigger 4 slice that I had.
  • How about unbreakable dishes and/or a cheese knife? Salad spinner?
  • I would think it depends on your food preferences and menu. I don't like salad so a spinner would be useless to me. As mentioned in another thread, most gadgets are a waste of money and space. Chefs can do most things with an excellent set of knives. They cost big bucks but they're worth far more in utility than gadgets. Once you get a good set, practice using them with knife techniques you can find on YouTube vids for free.

That and a Lodge 12" cast iron Dutch oven will cover most of your camping needs.
  • I have a few collapsible things, (colander, bowls, storage containers) and I don't really care for them. They don't seem as sturdy as the real thing, lots of extra spots for bacteria to hide. I've gone back to using regular kitchen items, I just look for stuff that stacks well, to minimize storage space.
