Cleaning the oven?

Thought I'd post this here, as most folks seem afraid to use the RV oven for some silly reason......

I use my oven almost every night to prepare my meals. Baked chicken, fish, casseroles etc.

I am thoroughly meticulous about trying to keep it clean, but after living in my TT for 4 months out of the past 5, my oven now needs to be cleaned. There are splashes and spills inside the thing. Not sure how they got there, as I always take steps to make sure I have no spills. I usually cover stuff I bake, but anyhow, I have a dirty oven.

I am very reluctant to get in there with the usual oven cleaners. They are absolutely NASTY!! I can't stink up the inside of the TT with those rude chemicals. Yuk!

Any of you who use your oven as often as I do - What do you use to clean the thing with?

Soap and water doesn't touch the stains.
  • Awesome is great. They have it at some Wal-Marts too.
  • The DW swears by Awesome. Available in the dollar stores. Spray it on and let it set then wipe off.
  • Geez! After 10 years of owning our MH, I didn't realize that you were supposed to clean the oven. I have always done the stove top, though. I did notice the other day that it look a bit dirty, but I fixed that by closing the door.

Thanks for that, vinegar I can tolerate, oven cleaner, no! That stuff friggin stinks real bad.

Does your recipe take the burned on splash stains off?

In my stick & bricks I have to open all doors and windows to get the stink out.

YES with a bit of scrubbing oven should be 'clean'

Will it clean the bottom of pans that have become "seasoned"?

  • Use one of those handheld steam cleaners. Put newspaper down on the floor to catch the mess. No smells, no chemicals.

drop down to the lower 48 some day. we have this new fangled jobby called a convection/microwave oven.

Just finished cleaning my nuker convection oven about an hour ago. A bowl of half water/half vinegar nuked on high for about 5 minutes followed by a scruffy sponge dipped in baking soda does a beautiful job. Do this once a week and you'll never have a baked on arm working out job.

For my regular oven I just spray the interior w/ water and baking soda, while the oven is still warm and wipe it down at meal's end. Again no massive build up cuz I do it regularly.

BobsYrUncle- no matter how careful you are mini fat globules and food particles will build up over time. Think of those yucky microwave ovens at workplaces and just extrapolate.

Using a cookie sheet under a casserole makes clean up of spillage easier as well.

  • Paint brush
    2 cups baking soda
    1/2 cup dawn dish soap
    1 cup distilled vinegar

    Heat oven on 'lowest' setting

    Make a paste
Pour the baking soda and dish soap in a bowl.
Stir in vinegar a little at a time until a thick paste is formed.

    Turn off oven
    Paint the paste on
Close oven door....6-8 hours later wipe down with clean water/rag rinsing often.

If you have any lavender oil a couple of drops helps mask the vinegar.
