Most anything a magnet will stick to will work. Farberware is fine unless you plan on running over it with a truck. Most pots and pans last a long time and though they sometimes get a few small dents but that won't affect it's ability to cook.
You can usually pick up some great pots and pans at yard sales and estate sales. We have a perfectly good set of pots and pans we picked up at a yard sale for $3. They work great.
