We have a Relative that raises beef. Does it the right way. Clean water at all times, Rotated grazing and clean pastures. No hormones etc.
I don't remember what he charges but it is high.
The Butcher here, the only one around for a long ways is charging 6.00 a pound for hamburger fresh or frozen. After so many hours he is required to freeze it. So Tuesday and perhaps sometimes Wednesday is the day to go, here.
Everybody with an acre has some cattle.
I suspect the reason for the high beef prices is export.
Most pork is now raised here and sent to China and butchered and some sent back for sale here.
Deals have just a short time ago been made to do chicken the same way.
We will be buying from the Butcher when we can. I may fence part of the place and raise a couple head. I'm too old to get into cattle raising. It's not simply turning out some cattle and let them feed and water themselves.

When gas prices are high, people start siphoning (stealing)more gas. When meat prices are high, I wonder if poaching or over limit harvesting goes on the rise?

OP here, The same report that said beef prices would go sky high-also mentioned that the prediction was that farm-raised rabbit would be the newest trend.
They passed a new law that chickens would have to be raised more humanely, so eggs/chicken prices will go up, too.

McDonalds' will have to start selling Bunny McNuggets, and Peter Cottontail McMuffins!

Unless she is selling finished cattle direct to consumer, that is NOT true. I raise cattle in ND too. Just sold calves, in the $2 range, but that is for feeders. The finished cattle were under $2/lb.

Figure though, that only about 60% of live wt. is left after changing to carcasses. Then, more loss in bone, fat, and cutting into cuts of beef.

$3 on the hoof... considering the cost of feed now, I'm glad I'm not feeding cattle anymore......

Feeder cattle eat distillers grain (by product from making ethanol) and they love it. It's more nutritious than grain. That's using the grain twice.
