crack in cast iron skillet

I recently bought a 10 inch cast iron chicken fryer at a flea market. As I was cleaning it up I noticed a 1 inch crack on the side wall. Can this be repaired or is it safe to use as is?

  • It is safe to use if it doesn't leak fry away. Many people use cracked skillets. Go to this site you will learn a lot. http://www.griswoldandwagner.com
  • Probably most likely used for decoration. If you want to clean it up nice to hang put it in your self-cleaning oven for 2 hours. Then rinse it after it has cooled. If there is any rust, scrub it off with a scouring pad. Then give it a nice coat of coconut oil and hang it up. Then look for a Griswold or Wagner Ware at a flea market or antique shop. The new ones are much heavier and not nearly as smooth. Don't be put off if it looks grubby. Follow my directions above and then just reseason it a few times by coating with the coconut oil and baking in the oven a few times after you have done the self-cleaning in the oven.
  • They make great decorations. Buy a new one.
