Multi-tasking condiments

The olive oil discussion had me thinking about how we stock the RV pantry. Since it's Spring and the RV is trying to lose weight like we are, I began thinking about multi-taskers.

One of our favorite multi-tasking condiments is the cheaper honey mustard. We use it as dressing on salads but also as a sandwich condiment. Same with Tiger Sauce.

What's your favorite multi-tasking pantry item and how many ways do you use it?

I typically don't change my pantry spices or condiments. I try to get my multi-tasking out of my grocery items, i.e. make multiple meals with same ingredients. Bell peppers, onions and mushrooms can be pizza, spaghetti and Philly Cheese steaks in the same trip.

I do much the same with the veggies and aromatics I frequently use. Got to love that many of them can be flash frozen. Since mushrooms don't freeze well I've taken to using dried 'shrooms. Normally I go with porcini and ****ake (hmmmm guess the auto editor doesn't like the start of that mushrooms name:D. It's shatake and just replace the first "a" w/ an "i",) caps but the skies the limit on that level. I use the strained soaking water as a broth for the dish I'm cooking for additional mushroom flavour.
  • Chimichurri is a great multi tasking condiment as is pesto. Either can be used as meat marinades, pasta sauces or cooked protein toppers, on bruschetta with a nice slice of cheese or grilled; to cook eggs in as a brunch type breakfast; mixed with cream cheese/sour cream/yougurt or creme fraiche as a dip.

  • There are so many good ideas mentioned, you made me think hard.

Italian dressing seasoning packets. Stir into cream cheese and serve on sandwiches or with veggies. Season whatever is in the crockpot. Add to yogurt or mayonnaise to marinate poultry and fish. Toss vegetables with oil and sprinkle with seasoning before grilling/roasting.

Waiting for someone to mention bacon bits -- another favorite of mine.
  • Can't say I've only one favorite as a be all, end all but in my experience you can do an awfully lot of good with a jar of mayonnaise.
Sandwich spread, salad dressing "watered down" w/ a little vinegar/yougurt and/or sour cream plus your favourite herbs and spices, hey maybe even another condiment like salsa. Apparently can also be used as a marinade for fish or poultry. As a base to make tartar sauce and of course it always makes a great hair and skin conditioner for dry hair and skin.

I doubt the same holds true for Miracle Whip:D;).
  • +1 for mustard (even cheap yellow mustard) as a rub on roasted meats like ribs. Helps the spices stick, loses it's mustardy flavor in cooking, and helps create a delicious crust on the meat that keeps in the juices and flavor.
  • Honey mustard is good for keeping dry rub on your meats, too.

I use hot sauce or salsa as my primary condiment. I make salad dressing by mixing picante sauce and sour cream. I use picante on veggie dogs and as a dip for chips and raw veggies. Ranch Dressing is also a good multi-tasker. You can add it to mashed potatoes for a little extra flavoring. You can use it in place of mayo or for dipping wings and veggies.
  • 1000 Island dressing..

It is essentially the "secret sauce" that McDonalds uses.
Good on salads, sandwiches, burgers,, have seen it used as a vegi dip.
