Glad to see there are other coffee connoisseurs in the world! I get goofy looks from people because I drink coffee all day long... into the evening! My wife's grandfather (still living) is the same way. Coffee from morning till just after dinner. (Last cup after dinner). I love coffee and have always been on the hunt for great brews and better ways to brew!
The purest form of coffee is to grind your beans and use a percolator. This gets the coffee very, very hot which all modern coffee makers no longer do. They now regulate the temperature to not get too hot so you burn yourself if you spill it. (Thank you Leibeck vs. McDonalds 1994). This is why some people still use a percolator or a french press. It allows you to get the coffee to a boiling point.
Personally, I use a percolator when camping for coffee. At home I use a Cusinart just because its convenient. I never buy ground coffee and I always get 1 pound of regular and 1 pound of decaff and i mix the beans for a half-calf blend and freeze them always. When camping, I pre-grind and keep it in the freezer of the RV. We only camp for a week at a time so im not too worried about the flavor getting lost in the grind for the week.
For me I found that Starbucks beans are always safe and taste good. However, I found a little place in Northern Michigan a few years back that roasts their own beans they import and sells via the internet. Theirs is by far the best in my opinion.
