Pie Iron

Just bought my first Rome Pie Iron. I'm in the process if seasoning it today. I was wondering if I could get ideas about how you store it for travel. I think I read that you should never wrap it in plastic, as I'm sure that would trap moisture if there were to be any missed when drying off. I'm concerned that the blackened outside could make a mess. I thought about storing it in an old pillow case. Is this a good idea? How and where do you store your's in your RV?

  • Great ideas above. I just take a paper towel, place it between the irons, wrap it around the outside a couple of times, then secure it with a rubber band. I think I like some of the other ideas better though.
  • I do them about the same as my DO's. I take a strip of the cotton belting that is used to make dress belts with, sorry don't know the official name. I put a strip under the lids of my DO's and I put a strip between the halves of my pie irons. I then use a a tie to keep the iron halves together.
    My theory is that the cotton will wick away moisture and keep the units open to air circulation. I've been doing this for about 20 years on well seasoned CI and never had any rust, so it seems to work.
  • We took a pants leg from an old pair of jeans. Sewed the cut end closed and use it as a bag for our pie irons.

    You can still buy packs of brown paper "lunch bags" at most grocery stores. They fit pie irons perfectly, and a twist-tie or rubber band will hold in place. Also works for metal hot dog sticks and other firepit tools.

    I keep a pack of those bags in the trailer because they're very handy for many purposes. Fresh vegetables, for example, will keep very well if placed in a wet brown bag and stored where air can circulate. They also fold into excellent packets for grillsteaming fish and other delicacies, provided of course they're wetted and not placed directly over flames.
