Rome Pie Iron

We just bought a Rome pie iron we all ready seasoned it. So it is ready to use. DW would like to know what are some of your favorite recipes? Thank You.
  • Another pie iron trick I like is to sprinkle the buttered bread with cinnamon sugar when making a sweet treat. Turns out really good.
  • Forgot, we've also have take bread, butter one side and sprinkle sugar on it and place it down in a side of the pie iron. Then spoon in some canned pie filling and top with another slice of bread with butter and sugar. Toast and it's really good.

Another good dessert if you like lemon meringue pie, is to take lemon curd and put it on bread and top with small marshmallows. Top with another slice of bread and toast. Is really good.
  • WE just used our pie irons almost exclusively this past weekend.

    1) On Friday night we took a slice of bread and placed it in one side. Then we took some left over spaghetti and put in on the break. Put some shredded cheese on top, followed by another slice of bread and then cooked until toasted.

    2) Saturday night, we took flour tortillas and place taco seasoned ground beef in one and added shredded cheese. Top with another tortilla and cook until toasted.

    3) We also made pizza pockets using sandwich thins, pizza sauce and shredded cheese. Add other ingredients after you wish. Top with another sandwich thin and toast.

    4) For dessert, I took a can of biscuits and cut each biscuit into fourths. I then put them in a gallon size zip loc back with brown sugar in it. I tossed them around in the brown sugar and then placed the biscuit pieces in the pie iron and then cook until done.

    5) Sunday morning, we took a can of cinnamon rolls and place one in a round pie iron and then cooked on the stove inside. Also took a square pie iron and took off the top part and placed it on the stove burner and cooked some left over link sausage that my daughter wanted.

You can use them as mini skillets also.

Another one of our recipes at here.
  • Keeping in mind I don't have the storage options many of you do (apartment dweller here), I sold my CI pie irons via CL this Spring and used rib racks and a waffle iron over a fire pit or charcoal grill instead this Summer. Worked nicely for pop tarts, cinnamon toast and buns, hash browns, and fruit pies/tarts.

You can do much the same with the pie irons and as well use em for meat pies, breakfast burritos, waffles, heat up pancakes, and toast.
  • I didn't know you could make so many different types of food with the pie irons. We have never owned one,my oldest son told us to get it. I love the idea of making small pie deserts.
  • We use ours to make manwich, samwiches. Make the meat sauce at home - bread, filling, cheese. Cook until warm through.

    2. Pies with canned apple pie mix and refrigerator biscuits. We've also done cherry, peach, and blackberry.

    3. Cornbread is perfect cooked in a pie iron and makes individual servings.

    4. Garlic bread (toasted bread with butter and garlic). YUM

    5. I have also fried potatoes that were really good in my pie irons. Some sliced potatoes, butter, salt and pepper.
  • Any grilled sandwich; favorites are Reubens, Ham (your favorite lunch meats) and Cheese. Pizza dough can make pizza pockets or calzones. I've made a Cuban.

I like making pies using:bread slices, crescent roll dough(extra care) or pie crust and whatever fillings you prefer. If I am not using fresh fruit, I get jar pie filling so I can easily save some for later.

I have also cooked the large cinnamon rolls over the fire this way but it takes more time.

For me, the trick is placing/supporting the iron so it's fairly level and not too hot.Turn often when you have a vulnerable bread such as a crescent roll.
  • If it fits on bread...eat it. :B

Pizza was my favorite as an evening snack as a youngster. Little sauce, some cheese & a pepperoni or two. Loved em.

Pie filling works great. Any pie will do for me.

Lately, ruebens for lunch if we have the fire going. Cornbeef, bit of kraut & some thousand Island dressing. HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYYYY

Have seen people use them to cook an egg, and just about anything else you can fit in a tiny skillet.

I think that only a ROUND maker should be called a PIE iron. Seals the bread, makes a pie. Square irons are SANDWICH makers. Makes a nice warm samiche.

Manufactures disagree....call any two skillets on a stick---pie irons.

Have one of each....both cast iron. Not a fan of aluminum irons.
