SOS: share your recipe

Chipped beef on toast aka SOS is a classic from mess halls. It's a love it or hate it dish but for those of us who love it, please share your spin on the recipe.

Mine is the basic white sauce with sautéed onions, mix in the shredded dried beef, and served on dark toast (almost but not quite burned). What's your recipe?

  • I use chopped chicken in white gravy poured over any kind of bread or rice. Sometimes, I add peas to the mix.
  • I never ate it all the years I was in the military. I finally tried it a couple of years ago and found it to be pretty good but I have never ordered it since. Huh.
  • Love it. One of the few dishes in dear Dad's repertoire. We like basic white sauce and rinse the chipped beef briefly before adding to the sauce to cut some of the saltiness. Creamed peas on toast makes me feel like a kid again, too. Happy days :)
  • I prefer to serve my SOS over well-done french fries. I make the white sauce with buttermilk instead of milk, as it adds a nice zing to the dish.
  • White sauce with chipped beef and chopped up hard boiled eggs. Sometimes I add fresh peas. On toast......on LIGHTLY toasted bread. :) :)
