Calphalon Tri-Ply is great and less expensive than All-Clad and is essentially identical. Don't buy a set, buy just what you need.
These types of pans heat a little less evenly than Calphalon all-aluminum pans but are fairly indestructible and can go in a dishwasher without concern. They're also stickier than nonstick aluminum so you'll probably want to get a heavy aluminum nonstick skillet just for eggs and maybe fish. Although I've normally used them on electric or gas burners I've also used them a lot on the charcoal grill, in the oven etc with no problems other than the exterior can get pretty grubby after 10 years.
