Thanksgiving on the Road or Off?

Camping season is over for me which simply means it's time for cold weather entertainment to begin with gusto.
Won't be hosting T-Day this year(again) but have been asked to bring dessert and a soup. The soup will be butternut and ginger (a constant family favorite) but still trying to figure out the sweet. We tend to do formal sit down dinners for the holidays but sometimes football gets in the way;).

What's happening by you?

  • We have traditionally gone to the Mojave Desert to go dirt bike riding and we take all the goods to bake pies, make stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy. We BBQ the Turkeys is the good old 22" Weber. My Brother does one and I do one. I bone my turkey out completely while it is raw(I leave the wings hanging on). Then I sew it back up and drop it in brine. Following morning I stuff it full and drop that dude on the BBQ for about 3 hrs. and the turkey is perfectly cooked. With out a carcass it cooks perfectly even.
  • We like to go camping for the holiday and have our turkey diner at the campsite.
  • SIL is joining us in Quartzsite...we'll do ham in crockpot, sweet tators, salad and pumpkin pie. On Saturday, we're headed to Phoenix to hit a big quilt shop and a dinner/ theater. :)
  • One more year (3 now!) where I won't be cooking. At home but since cooking means a smoked-over-wood-chips turkey and the current apartment is a non-fire place, Thanksgiving will be at a nice restaurant.

Maybe next year the smoker will get used....like it was for 10 years preceding the last 3.
  • On the road, sort of. Heading to our soon to be full time retirement house in Utah. The neighbors would starve without me. LOL!

    Pumpkin cake with chocolate ganache
  • Great topic. As we do every year we go to a state park with the children and grandchildren and make Thanksgiving feast over the fire in dutch ovens. One 14" deep will have a ham. Another will have pot roast. Hashbrown casserole will be in another d.o. The rest is made on the stove or brought by the family. One son and his wife always bring the turkey. The others bring veg casseroles, soups and pies. Of course we always have about a gallon of cranberry sauce on the side. One granddaughter will eat nothing but that with maybe a slice of pumpkin pie. You know how some picky eaters can be.

No tv football. Just hikes, volleyball and the grands playing tag. Everyone falls into bed by 9:30 and we get up to the smell of bacon and biscuits thanks to Herself.
