UNSTUFFED CABBAGE ROLLS

Saw this on Facebook and thought it was a good recipe for camping!
I also put beef broth and make it into a soup. yum!

UNSTUFFED CABBAGE ROLLS

Ingredients:

1 1/2 to 2 pounds lean ground beef
1 tablespoon oil
1 large onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 small cabbage, chopped
2 cans (14.5 ounces each) diced tomatoes
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon sea salt

Preparation:

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and onion and cook, stirring, until ground beef is no longer pink and onion is tender.
Add the garlic and continue cooking for 1 minute.

Add the chopped cabbage, tomatoes, tomato sauce, pepper, and salt. Bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes, or until cabbage is tender.
Yield: Serves 6 to 8
  • That is a family fav....I call it "lazy man cabbage rolls"...my aunt would make the real thing and would be an all day event...rice is a must along with chopped smoke sausage...a bottle of beer added for the rice to absorb makes it mine...
  • UNCANNY! I just printed this recipe from Facebook about an hour ago! I have made something very similar, but it cooked in the oven. I am going to give this a try.
  • You might try some Manwich in place of the tomato sauce. I did this at the suggestion of Leo Bensen, and it does give the dish some zip.
The dish does sound very good. Long live the crock pot.
  • I use just about the same ingredients, adding an egg and bread crumbs, and form it into a ball. Then quarter a small head of cabbage and place it in a small Dutch oven. I put the meat mixture on top of the cabbage and bake it, with the lid on (inside or over coals). Then I have it over rice and try not to eat myself into a coma!
  • No salt or a blood pressure pill? Water melons are ripe, I'll take the pill!
  • I use one called nu-salt for anything that calls for salt. I have learned to love the taste, can't eat foods without it. I used to love sea salt and thought I couldn't live without that either. I am only supposed to have 1300 mg a day. Hard to do with all the natural sodium in foods.
  • Tomatoes seem to hide salt taste.

If you look at your labels on the cans with tomato products in them, I think you will find that they have huge amounts of salt. Although you can shop for those with the least salt.

& if you value your health, even with the lowest amount of salt per canned tomatoes, and canned tomato sauce, you won't add any other salt to the recipe.

As someone with high blood pressure, I'm told to have no more than 1500 mg of salt per day - 1 teaspoon is 2400 mg in salt.

If you insist on salt taste, use one of those 'no salt' items.

    :C
  • The recipe that specifically calls for the beef broth also has the rice so the broth is actually liquid for the rice. I like to omit the liquid and the rice and put over mashed potatoes. I also swap all the tomato base ingredients for the Italian seasoned tomato sauce. Lots of recipes for this out there calling for tomato soup and that just doesn't sound appealing to me.
