volcano grill vs cobb grill

Any one have any experience with both the cobb grill and the volcano grill? I realize they are slightly different animals. Where the cobb is more of a very proficient grill/oven, where as the volcano is more of a grill. But that's alright with me, as we are starting into dutch oven cooking and understand the Volcano is great for that. Any and all healp appreciated. Oh yeah, we are B campers and space is a premo!

  • wbwood, have you checked any of the CW walk in stores? That is where we got ours. terry r.
  • Just watched videos on the volcano and Cobb. Love the volcano. I would definitely go with that one.

Just wish camping world sold them. Have a CW gift certificate and would definitely buy one with it if they sold them.
  • The Volcano is superb with a dutch oven. Be sure to get the Volcano lid. It's heat proof and covers the top of the oven. It turns your dutch oven into a great oven. I got a cast trivet to use in my oven when I make biscuits. I put it under my round baking pan and get the bottoms done perfectly. The Volcano lid, by itself, makes a great cover when roasting a chicken, etc on the grill. It is also nice if it's a little windy out. It keeps the grill hotter. This is what I carry for a dutch oven. Very versatile.

SWMO, thanks for the info. We had a 12" for years but never really used it. Just got a 10" deep and plan on using it a lot more, especially since we're retired and have time to sit back and watch it cook. This Dutch Oven thing is kind of contagious. We're planning to take in the NDOG is Iowa in Sept. to pick up some hints.

Hope to see you there! The folks involved with DOGs are a generous and fun bunch.

  • Cobb grill is not made in the USA, but they are still being made. The distributor is out of business. Two Brothers Grillin' has been selling them by ordering large amounts of them from the manufacturer. He is expecting an order by the end of Feb. or into March. If you want the Cobb, by the time summer gets here, you should be able to buy the Cobb and Accessories.

According to Two Brother's Grillin', they also, now make a family size grill, as well as a gas version. To waiting might give you more options if you are interested in that type of grill. terry r.

Congrats on pursuing the cast iron chef dream. Since you're short on space and you're doing the D.O. get the volcano as it will serve double duty with your new hobby. The DO will also act as an oven.

X2 If you're short on space don't overdue the DO size. We have cooked for well over a decade or two on 8" and 10" DO's. We only pull the 12
' out when we have kids and GK's to feed. If you measure your home pots you'll likely find that they are in the 8-10" range.

I know that many like their Cobb grills, but for me personally it was a disappointment. With accessories they can griddle and such, but they can't do the high temp grilling of meat.
  • What magnusfide said.

Cobb grill- small, with accessories, very versatile, a little slower. No need to have a Dutch oven if weight is a concern.

Seems lighter weight than the volcano, especially if you have to carry a Dutch oven.

Best to cook with lid on, to hold heat in, even when grilling.

Cooks for a smaller crowd. Perfect for 2-4. Can add sides to the moat to cook.

I have 2 of them, with one set of accessories, so I can use them to cook different kinds of things at the same time, or a larger amount of the same thing, if it doesn't require an additional accessory... like 2 fry pans. That is for a larger group. Otherwise we take one and accessories.

Volcano grill- depending on model you buy, it is more versatile as far as fuel source goes.

    Bigger food print.

For baking you need the additional heat resistant cloth like lid, unless you are using a Dutch oven with coals on top. Lid virtually eliminates the need for top coals with oven.

Better for straight grilling. Easier to regulate temperature.

Accessories available specific to the grill, but other non specific items work just as well, unlike the Cobb because of it's size and the need for a lid most of the time, for more efficient cooking.

At the present time, Cobb grill accessories are virtually impossible to come by. Two Brothers Grillin', http://www.twobrothersgrillin.com/ have the grills, but no separate accessories. They are working to become the North American Dealers at the present time.

I have both grills because, when they closed them out at the local Camping World, I bought 2 Volcanos with propane attachments for $48 apiece. I also bought the two Cobbs they had for close to the same price, and one they had with a missing rubber foot for even less. I have had the Cobb for a while and the extras are gifts for my children. I am waiting on two extender rings to come back in stock, so they have all of the accessories.

If I had to choose one that would meet needs of camping and home use in the most versatile ways, I would chose the Volcano. If it came right down to it, you could even use it to do canning with the propane attachment.

If I wanted one to cook leisurely, for 2, using charcoal, had limited space, and didn't want to carry a Dutch oven but still bake, I would get the Cobb.

If I wanted the most fuel versatility, hotter grill, and wanted to use the Dutch oven with it, I would get the Volcano with the lid.

With the Cobb, you can always take a Dutch oven too, and just cook with the DO in usual way.

If you think you want the accessories with a Cobb, you would be taking the chance that they might not be available in the US.

Another propane, light weight option, is the CADAC Safari. Also available at the same website. It is a quick and easy. We have used one of those for years. It is what we grab for those impromptu picnics or quick road trips... another close out grill.
