PLEASE... don't let Kevin BACON die. - VeronicaExplorerEven my vegetarian kid loves bacon.
- doxiemom11Explorer III like bacon also, but for the 2 of us find that we cook part of a pkg, and then end up not using the other half. I instead buy real bacon bits. I can add these in recipes in place of the cooked crisp break into pieces bacon from the package and it is the same. No dirty frying pan, no grease to dispose of, just easier. Now for breakfast you would not be able to cheat like this. I agree I'm going to enjoy food and my life and not try to live to be 110 years old and miserable. My mother-in-law lived to be almost 103, and enjoyed good health until around 98. The last 5 years were not a blessing for her. I'd rather go happy!
PS - I am normal weight, I do not have high blood pressure, I am not on any medications and I smoke. Have done so for 46 years. I require less medical care than many of the non-smokers, diet watchers, vegans that I know. I do not exercise to exercise either, just enjoy casual walks, working in my garden, housekeeping etc as my form of exercise. Bring on the bacon! - magnusfideExplorer II

This brings up one of those real philisophical questions like, is there pork belly in heaven? I wonder if the answer is denominationally specific?
Since pork belly isn't kosher or allowed for some faiths, I'm thinking that a denominationally specific theological discussion of such is in order.
Of course I belong to a denomination that says bacon is fine except on Fridays in Lent. This I can live with;) - Shortie3ExplorerI have read in several different articles that 70% of all the people who die from heart attacks have normal cholesterol levels!
- sausagekingExplorerI have never seen a turkey big enough to cut bacon from, but last week I smoked some pork loin after soaking in a brine for five days to substitute for bacon.
- MootpointExplorerTo quote Emeril "PORK FAT RULES!"
- Super_DaveExplorerAs a good friend of mine says, "Some eat to live and some live to eat."
- Leo_BensonExplorerGood question! I like food but I put my life/enjoyment of other things in life ahead of that. I have a lot of dietary restrictions for health reasons. I can live with 99% of them (like real bacon) and the other 1% (like corned beef) become occasional treats in moderation.
I actually like thick unprocessed organic turkey bacon. It cooks up crisp and flavorful and I don't miss pork bacon.
Having worked as an ICU/CCU RN and the in nursing home management, I've got a pretty good view of who (demographically, diet-wise) is dying of heart attacks/strokes, and who is living in long term care. While some health issues have a genetic component lifestyle (diet, lack of exercise, smoking) is the straw that breaks the camel's back for many people.
And trust me, those people who proudly boast about enjoying life and life is too short not to eat what you want, etc., change their tune pretty fast when they're having a heart attack. Nobody says ok doc, let me go, I ate food that was no good for me and enjoyed every minute of it, so, the trade-off was worth it, I'm ready to go now.
I don't begrudge anybody their bacon, hey, I love it too, I just decided other things were more important. (And since DH works for a major pharma, I guess you could say a certain statin pays my mortgage- thanks to the bacon-eaters, lol!!)
