games and experiments

looking for ideas to keep a pair of toddlers entertained. they love exploring and testing stuff. the park we are going to is by no means nature orientated (normally we would go catch critters or canoe or fish or swim at the beach) but we are just doing an overnighter at a privet park. anyone have any fun ideas I might not have heard of? thinking I will bring some shovels to see what we can dig up, stuff for snipe hunts, some baking soda and vinegar type deals. going to the dollar store tonight to get some insect cages, kites, air rockets, glow sticks that kind of thing. incase you haven't figured it out im very much into being a kid again with my kids
  • This might be a little too old for your children, but we have a treasure map and we look for treasure. I have found that if it is treasure, you can interpret a map any way you want to and children will accept that. also, stick horses and cowboy hats are a good thing, the kids can look for rustlers. The sand box is a great idea. I have the fancy sand that sticks together and it feels nice on your hands. Kids love it. Love the plastic table cloth idea. And, if you have a pad to park next to, some chalk will keep them busy a very long time.
  • Our grandchildren that age loved to play in sandboxes. We filled a low Rubbermaid box with sand and sat it on a plastic tablecloth. The tablecloth was to make it possible to pick up the spilled sand. Lots of odds and ends to use as sandbox toys. The second time we stopped at Dollar Tree and got some toys instead of searching thru the TT for things that would work as toys.

Not only did our grandchildren love the sandbox buy other children kept showing up to play with them. Had to make a rule that they could not just drop over without letting their parents know.
  • thanks guys. im back. had a great time. toddler #2 and his dad (our guests) had to leave but my little ones (2.5 and 7 weeks) both did awesome. cant wait to go again. if I could post pics I would but work blocks the upload site. anyone have suggestions for other free photo hosting websites?
  • A scavenger hunt... Things on the list could be a pine cone, some thing red, a stick that looks like an "L", something fuzzy, a flat rock, etc.

  • For me toddlerhood ends at 3 or 4 yrs of age and you have more than needed in the idea department to entertain your kiddos for a weekend trip :).

    Have fun out there!
  • Pretty much, if you just turn the kids loose, they'll find their own entertainment. My 3 year old grandson lives with us, and he's always coming up with some kind of stunt to keep us laughing. Kids are creative. Let them use their imaginations and do what come most natural to them ... simply play. You don't need to entertain them.

    Edit:
Our grandson (3 years old) loves to get a pair of grandpa's winter gloves, his Spiderman stocking winter hat, a pair of over-sized shoes, and a wooden spoon from the kitchen drawer. He uses the wooden spoon as a sword and he's a dragon slayer! (Did I not mention, he's stripped down completely bare and these are the only things he has on? .... he's going through that phase right now... but he's slaying dragons!) Let them have their imaginations! That what separates the consumers from the producers later in life! We let his daddy do the same thing when he was the same age. He's now a computer software developer creating software for computer systems for government medical research. Awesome guy he is. It all started with his imagination!

Sounds a little kinky, but ok.
  • That's awesome, have fun. I wish my kids were that age again, about to be empty nesters
