You may want to look into a Westchester County campground on the Hudson River in Croton-on-Hudson, or Buchanan, I believe. A MetroNorth station is right near it to take you down to NYC. I have never stayed there, as I live less than 1/2 hr from there, but I heard it's convenient for NYC site seeing. Good luck, and enjoy!
and
Croton Point
are open year-round.
I'm pretty sure Pound Ridge is closest to the MetroNorth train station(commuter train that goes to NYC' Grand Central Station) but could be wrong.
Follow the links, call the parks and I'm sure they'll tell you distances and if you need a taxi/bus to get to the train station(s).
Both parks are beautiful and Westchester county should be proud of itself. High praise from a NYC resident;).
PS- you really don't need a guided tour for NYC. Goodness knows I never recommend them to any of my friends visiting from overseas or this continent BUT if it'll make you more comfortable and familiarise you go with Grey Tours. Their guides are knowledgeable, friendly and don't make up history as they go along, LOL. They (and all the other tour buses) pass my street everyday.

- jfkmkExplorerWhile you can't get any closer than Liberty Harbor, the Newburgh KOA is nice and I believe they offer tours to NYC.
- NCWriterExplorerWe just stayed there a couple of weeks ago. Nobody would define it as "nice", but the convenient location is exceptional. Beautiful view of the NY skyline. We took the Path train into the World Trade Center and rode the ferry home to the Marina/campground,, VERY close to our site. Both were fast, train is cheapest and ferry only on weekdays. The neighborhood is much better than some outdated Trip Advisor review photos. It is very gentrified and we felt totally safe.
- tropical_ronExplorerX3 - - this park, Liberty, is the only show in town...Perfect location; as others have said, catch a ferry across the Hudson River to Southport or take a tour from the campground. It's all about location.
