New York City Camping

Me and two sons will be participating in the five boroughs bike ride in May. Considering staying at Liberty Park Campground which apparently very close to the city.

Two questions; anyone on the forum done the bike ride and any thoughts on Liberty Park as a place to park a 39 ft travel trailer for 5 days?

Any input appreciated.
  • Did you mean Liberty Harbor RV Park for me and my two sons? Haven’t done that bike ride yet, no.
  • Liberty harbor is a gravel parking area in NJ across from Manhatten. It is close in, but doesn't offer too much.
It worked for us a few years back!
  • Liberty Harbour is high priced for a very tight parking lot, no sewer hookups but a dump. However, can't be beat for location ease when exploring NYC. Stayed there a couple of years back for 3 days/nights, but only slept in the RV and was out all days and nights.

We would definitely stay there again for the pure easy access into NYC, and intend to do so for maybe up to a week to explore moreso. We also enjoyed walking the immediate surrounding area outside of Liberty Harbour, the coffee shops, fishing areas etc.
  • Thanks for the feedback. My assumption is that we would spend very little time at the Park and most of our time exploring the city. Sounds like a no frills place to park for a few days but one that will get us close to the city.
  • I've done the 5 Boro bike ride several times and had a lot of fun. At one point I guess they had a lot of people joining in without paying. Their solution was to have "pinch points" where all riders had to funnel through so they could check for vests. More standing around than riding, so we stopped. That was years ago, I don't know if they've changed.
  • I haven't stayed at either of these, but have done a bit of online looking for possible future trips, so take this with a grain or two of salt.

Liberty Harbor has a great convenient location and some hookups, but not much else. It's perhaps the best option generally speaking.

Floyd Bennet Field (part of the Gateway National Recreation Area) has some RV sites--really more like parking spaces, I think--that are quite affordable. Unfortunately, getting there would mean driving through the Bronx on surface streets since the parkways are not usable by RVs, and it's not nearly as convenient to public transportation overall.
