Amputation

Feeling sad tonight. My daughter's cat has to have one of his rear legs amputated tomorrow. She noticed him limping a few weeks ago and took him to the vet. Vet initially thought he had pulled a muscle or got let caught on something when jumping up or down and gave her pain meds until it healed. The other day, she noticed that when he was walking, he was walking on the top of his foot. Took him in again and x-rays found that he had at some time previously broken his hip. He had no reaction to tests for feeling in his foot, so has nerve damage in the leg. They never saw anything to indicate a broken hip prior to the limping but vet said injury older than a few weeks.

Poor Casey. We know he will be okay with only 3 legs, but having to have the surgery done is really making everyone feel sad.
  • Well, Casey was not able to come home today. He is not wanting to move around yet, so another night away. They are hoping he's feeling better tomorrow. I don't think I would feel like moving around too much yet either.
  • We had a cat many years ago, something happened to Morris that made his right front leg unusable, it just sort of hung there. We thought maybe he got it caught in the log pile, maybe one moved and trapped his leg.

Anyway the only recourse was to amputate it...it was incredible how well he recovered and how quickly.

He ran just as fast as before, played just as hard and he lived to a ripe old age of 18...still miss this guy too!

I know you feel sadness, I remember that too, I cried and cried saying he'd never be the same and it would hurt him so much but none of that was true, you'll see.

  • One other thing about Tripawds...they also have a Facebook page. I found that first and then went to the website. A lot of animals are three legged because of cancer, but there are a surprising number of them who had injuries or birth defects. They also have quite a few more kitties now than they used to. I found it comforting to be able to ask questions and read the forums and see that I was not the only one going through the amp process.
  • Casey's surgery went well. He will be staying overnight and if he gets up and moves, eats and uses the litter box, he can come home tomorrow. Thank you Murphsmom for the information. I will pass that on to my daughter.

Now - their lab goes in on Thursday for treatment of a hematoma on his ear. Between 2 adults, 3 kids under 5 (twins in there) and 3 pets, life is hectic for them sometimes.

Thanks everyone for your words of encouragement.
  • There is a wonderful online support group for parents of three legged cats and dogs. It is Tripawds.com. We have been members of the group for two years now, ever since our Lab/Chessie, Murphy, had his leg amputated following a collision with a moving vehicle. They have a wealth of information, helpful hints, and a caring group of people who are in the same position as your daughter finds herself.

Please let your daughter know that there is help out there. There are discussion forums, live chats with other Tripawd parents, sections on nutrition, gear, and vet experts who are very knowledgeable.

Here is hoping that everything goes well for your grandkitty.
  • I have a three legged pit bull and he's a real inspiration to me. The previous owner backed over him when he was a puppy and then took him to the vet to be put down. The guy tossed the puppy on the counter and left without leaving his name or contact information. The vet tech paid for the puppy's care and I volunteered to provide round the clock care. I ended up adopting him and have had him for six years. He can run as fast as the other dogs in a straight line and when he needs to turn he does a forward roll and changes direction. He can jump up on the beds and gets into the same amount of trouble as the other dogs. He digs holes in the yard by laying on side and digging with his good leg. The only problem he has is going down the RV steps. He waits for me lift him down. He doesn't realize he's handicapped. It only took him a couple of weeks to get over the amputation.
  • Prayers for Casey and human kin. Cats are quite remarkable in their resiliency.
  • Sorry to hear about that...like brine your cat will do well and be resilient.!!!
  • Sorry to see this. Hope all goes well with the surgery and recovery. He will probably amaze you with his resiliency. Keep us posted!
