I think you are better off going to a boutique pet store that focuses on food than you are asking your vet. I have never had a vet recommend anything other than something like Science Diet - and all of those large name brand foods have had recalls, and are usually made somewhere over sees.
And those boutique stores are ONLY going to carry expensive brands and try to convince you that's what you need. That's the whole purpose of a boutique store. I must have the only vet clinic that tells you to feed whatever works for YOUR dog with guidance if the dog has special issues. Many places will steer you towards what they sell but if they try to force a food on you ask why and feel free to just say no.
