Burrs

Put boots on the dogs feet. The boots are sold at most pet stores.

If they won't wear boots, maybe try rubbing some hair conditioner on their paws before they go out. That way, if they get burrs, they might come out easier.

X2 on conditioner or hand cream, something to oil up the fur a bit.

Was in TX one year and had to trim my spaniel because of them. I like the hand cream or conditioner idea for the feet. boots are great if the kid will tolerate them. I used a comb to get them out, much easier. Sand spurs must be a cousin?

We were at a campground in the Red Woods one time and the burrs were so bad. A very nice campground privately own, but couldn't understand why they didn't clean it up. We ended up taking the dogs on car rides out of the RV park for their potty breaks.

I have boots, but have never had any luck getting the boys to walk with them on. I think I will drag them out and start putting them on in the house, to see if they will acclimate to them. We have a couple of weeks, to try that approach.

That would be the ideal solution. As a back up if that doesn't work, I think I am going to try vet wrap around their feet. Thinking if they do get caught in the feet, pulling the vet wrap off, would get them out of the foot pads. I also found some disposable booties out of white paperish material on clearance. I grabbed a pack of them to see if they will work.

I think I remember you posting about that. :)
If not you, someone else, but it was TX and a spaniel involved.
After reading that, I always carry one of my clippers with me.
You never know when you might need it. I have learned a lot from this list.

Footwear (booties) and Suspenders to keep them on




Course by the time you get the booties on and the suspenders attached it will be too late..........like when I was a kid and Mom bundling me up to go outside n the snow. :B

I looked up sand spurs. I stand corrected -- the things I am talking about definitely look like the sand spurs. ANd we had been there in the spring before and never noticed it. ONly during fall trips. From what I Just read this fits with sandspurs too.

They really don't get caught in my dogs' hair... the problem we had was them getting imbedded in between the footpads.

I did find some boots and put them on the boys here this evening. One dog was doing a lot of high stepping and foot slapping.. The other one was not amused and refused to walk. If I can get them to adapt to wearing the boots, it will save a headache later on. I have a few weeks to work on them with the boots.
