Cat traveling medical precautions

We are planning a extended month and a half long trip to the Galveston Tx area and over to Tucson Az with two cats who have all their vaccines. They never go outside at all, just enjoy looking out the window. Are there any special medical precautions, special flea/mosquito stuff or anything thing, that we have to be concerned with? I see that heartworm is very prevalent in the southeast Texas area.

  • our two cats camp with us all the time, everywhere. We don't do anything special. They are 100% inside the camper. If one were to get out of the camper, we'd probably never see them again anyway!
  • Re heartworm, your vet in NY may not be using the same protocol for cats as those in TX might. We are in an endemic heartworm area, but few choose to do heartworm preventive with cats. They don't seem to be as susceptible as dogs and often the heartworm disease does not progress like it does in dogs. Arizona has very low incidence of HW.

If your cats are kept inside and you don't have lots of mosquitoes in the RV, you have a very low risk. We take Henry with us and don't do HW preventive even when heading south.

As far as fleas, prevention would probably be a good idea and that is something your vet in NY could discuss with and help you with.

  • I would check with your personal vet.

We travel with two elderly cats and two dogs. If we are going into a new area, we check always with him to see if there are any precautions we need to take.
