Residents in our valley tell us about the coyotes all around the valley. They were on this farm killing fawns before we moved in; so far we've not heard them around since we moved to this farm. Either the ones around us not have not acquired a taste for sheep or Sam (working Maremma Sheepdog) has put out the word that they are not welcome on his farm. Either way we do not want these local coyotes killed because those that would move into the open territory may have a taste for sheep (and willing to test Sam). When the day comes that coyotes start testing Sam we will add additional LGDs (livestock guardian dogs).
The goal is not to kill preditors but to train the local preditors that our livestock is more difficult/risky to obtain than other prey. This is very old knowledge (see Aristotle's History of Animals) that modern societies are having to relearn.
