Perhaps unrelated to your situation, our rescue pup who we got at age 6 has always been afraid of the water dish regardless of water type. We have to hold the bowl in our hand for her to drink, then she is fine with it. She will slowly approach a water bowl we are not holding and growl. As you said, it is more the "need a little help here" growl not the "I'm gonna bite you" growl. Just to diagnose, try holding it in your hand above the floor like a bowl holder would be. Perhaps the medications caused a mental perception or fear issue.
