Well, you may THINK this, but you really don't know.
We had 2 dogs, but smaller, in the 20 pound range. At the camper they appeared to always be calm and quite comfortable. We'd even leave them in the camper and go outside for walk and see what they'd do. They never barked. You'd never know they were there.
Then one day, I suggested to the wife we leave one of our cell phones in the camper dialed into our other cell phone and go to a restaurant. Total time away from the camper would have been probably an hour. We could listen to what was actually happening inside the camper when we were TRULY away.
We said our good-byes to the doggies and out the door we went. We started up the truck and gone.
It wasn't more than 30 seconds after we pulled away they both started barking. We thought they'd stop. They barked the entire time we were gone. We returned about an hour later, still barking, we could hear on the phone.
As soon as we pulled up to the camper, they stopped. We went inside and there they were, both laying there just sweet as pie.
We figure they heard the sound of the truck and knew it was us coming. As soon as they recognized the truck engine, they quieted down again.
We NEVER left any of our dogs alone in the camper again after that. We've been through a couple more dogs since then, and they always go with us. We alter our activities so someone is always with the dogs.
At home, they are very, very, very seldom ever alone either.
