Dog In Camper

Hi Folks, we have an 8 yr old German Shepard that we would like to take alone on a trip in the near future. Most stops on our trip will be out door type activity's , which are not a problem. The issue that we are facing is what to do with the dog when we go into say an amusement park? Our guy is not much of a barker so leaving him in the camper as long as ac is on would work. Or would it? We would never leave him tied up outside. Just wondering what others do in this situation? Thanks in advance.

  • Has the dog been on camping trips before?

Has the dog been left alone in camper before?

Does the dog like going/being in camper?

YES, YES, YES---then take the dog/turn on TV-Radio, set A/C and be back within a reasonable time frame for YOUR dog.
When we went FT or dog was 4 and could be left alone for up to 8 hrs easily (just like when we worked) BUT as she got older we had to shorten that time frame down to 4 hrs by the time she was 11 yrs old

So taking the dog along really depends on how well the dog responds.

And when you get back to camper have the courtesy to check with neighbors on HOW the dog reacted.......and ask them to be truthful.
Many folks think their dog is well behaved when they are gone....but they are gone so they don't REALLY know.
  • We leave our dog and cat in air conditioned space when we go out, but we try to make trips short. Some amusement parks have kennels. I've seen apps that send you alerts if, for example, your RV loses power, although I can't remember the names.
  • I take the Collies all the time. I try not to leave them in the RV for more then 2 to 3 hours at a time. I leave the tv or radio on along with A/C. I never travel to areas that are hot during the summer. I try to find a shade tree to park under as well, if the A/C would go out it would take longer to warm up. I usually take them on a long walk before I head out as well.
  • I travel with 3 dogs, one is disabled and uses rear wheels. We leave them in the truck in the shade if the temperature is okay. Mostly we travel in summer in the mountains where it is cooler. We take our dogs everywhere but never leave them outside. They feel the most safe in the truck.

He already addressed that and said he would never leave him outside.

We take our Corgi all the time. She loves it. Stays in camper when we are out and about, with no issues. I have left a phone on audio record while I was gone for 2 plus hours. Did that on several occasions. She never once barked.

I do worry about power going out in the park and the A/C shutting off. So I have a fan that runs on batteries that I set up. I still haven't figured out what setup I want to use to be able to check up (camera/internet).

  • Most parks have a rule against leaving dogs outside unattended, even if tied.

We have always left our dogs in the RV with air running if hot when sightseeing. But they have always been very quiet and calm Goldens. We would take them for a walk first and they retire to a dark corner for a nice nap. And still asleep when we return. But we have also had neighbors whose dogs would bark continuously the entire time they were gone. Do they bark at people or sudden noises? If unsure, close all shades so they can’t see and bark at people or dogs passing by. And hang around outside for a while after leaving them to see if they start barking.
  • Do you leave your dog at home in the summer with the A/C on? What is the difference? Of course, if the A/C or electricity failed while gone, the camper would heat up much faster, but with smart phones and technology, there are ways to monitor the temperatures.
