Dakota has fully recovered from getting run over and has become a shadow again.He has developed a taste fro spaghetti. He kept nuzzling my elbow with an insistence so I put some in his food dish. Had it again this evening and he wouldn't leave me alone. He wouldn't touch his food in the dish.So I gave him some spaghetti with meat sauce. He licked his bowl clean and came over and nuzzled me and wondered off to get his ball.I know onions aren't good for dogs or possibly tomatoes too but it is cooked. Guess I better not let him have too much of it or too often.Anything we eat he wants as preferred over any dog food. It's no wonder when you read the labels, even the most expensive ones. Maybe I ought to can spaghetti and meat sauce for dogs, without onions.Haven't bought Chef Boyardee in many years but it might be cheaper than dog food.

Onions and garlic in all forms -- powdered, raw, cooked, or dehydrated -- can destroy a dog's red blood cells, leading to anemia. That can happen even with the onion powder found in some baby food. An occasional small dose is probably OK. But just eating a large quantity once or eating smaller amounts regularly can cause poisoning. Symptoms of anemia include weakness, vomiting, little interest in food, dullness, and breathlessness.

*Ditto*Ditto*Ditto to the above posts! I'm sure you love your pet, but feeding them people food is just a bad idea. I worked in vet med for 25 years in my past life and the list goes on and on for all the physical problems you can cause your dog allowing him to "guilt" you into feeding him things you shouldn't. I'm not trying to sound mean... but.. if you REALLY love your dog you'll stop doing that and make him eat dog food. Tell your vet about it the next time you see him/her. They will help you see the light. There are some people foods you can feed your dog without causing him problems, but I don't think something spicy like a red sauce is one of them. .

Barring a medical condition that required a very specific diet, I would never, ever feed a dog nothing but dog food.Would any human eat nothing but Total cereal (or a similar very highly processed food) and assume it's a healthy diet? No! And yet the dog food manufacturers have worked very hard, and have had a lot of success, at convincing a gullible public that feeding their pets nothing but highly processed, dehydrated crunchy bits is healthy.The flip side of that is that not all "people" food is good for pets. A lot of it isn't good for humans! You have to educate yourself and use some basic common sense.Unfortunately, too many people don't bother to educate themselves and/or lack the common sense gene, and so to err on the side of caution a lot of vets will advise not feeding any "people food" to pets. Not because there's anything wrong with it when done right, but because so many people just don't bother to do it right.Spaghetti is probably not a good choice for a dog. Neither are the remnants of a cheesy, greasy casserole with a zillion ingredients.But a little hard boiled egg, plain yogurt, some steamed veggies, a bit of leftover lean grilled chicken or steak w/o sauce? Absolutely!Now I've got to go fix my dogs some breakfast. For which they'll get a bit of dog food and a few spoonfuls of green beans. I cook a pot every week just for them. And no, neither of them needs to lose weight. They just love green beans.

I have never had a pet, 'run over', nor would I permit a dog to 'nuzzle' my elbow while I was eating. Sigh, I guess if I have to explain it, you just aren't going to understand.

Exactly what we do. Our yellow lab patiently lays down and waits for his one bite AFTER we're done eating. In fact, it's his motivation to stay put. He knows that WE eat first, then he eats.

This is internet myth not supported by scientific feeding studies or genetics.

Dogs (in general) have the genetics to digest cooked grains and cereals (i.e. starch); this has been proven over and over again in well controlled feeding studies and testing of nutritional values in food prior and after digestion by dogs. Individual dogs may have compromised genetics or health issues which require specific diets to maintain proper health.

The domestication of dogs was an important episode in the development of human civilization. The precise timing and location of this event is debated1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and little is known about the genetic changes that accompanied the transformation of ancient wolves into domestic dogs. Here we conduct whole-genome resequencing of dogs and wolves to identify 3.8 million genetic variants used to identify 36 genomic regions that probably represent targets for selection during dog domestication. Nineteen of these regions contain genes important in brain function, eight of which belong to nervous system development pathways and potentially underlie behavioural changes central to dog domestication6. Ten genes with key roles in starch digestion and fat metabolism also show signals of selection. We identify candidate mutations in key genes and provide functional support for an increased starch digestion in dogs relative to wolves. Our results indicate that novel adaptations allowing the early ancestors of modern dogs to thrive on a diet rich in starch, relative to the carnivorous diet of wolves, constituted a crucial step in the early domestication of dogs.

Our dogs like dog kibble, cat kibble, sheep manure, dog manure, cat manure, rabbit manure, cow manure, skunk manure, grass, flowers, dirt, live rodents, carrion, people food (raw or cooked), etc. I usually don't consider our dogs have having a discerning pallet which is why I make it our responsibility to control their diet.

My grandparents always had a couple dogs around the farm. Granted they were considered more "livestock" than pets, but they never brought dog food in their life. Dogs and cats only got leftover people food. They all seemed very healthy and long lived. That said, our 4 huskies all get high-quality dog food with a very little people food. We just don't have enough leftovers for 4 dogs.

Don't feed Dakota at the table. Sitting on the sofa or at the computer or elsewhere he will nuzzle my elbow if he wants something. If he wants it rather badly he gets his nose under my elbow and nuzzles it upwards kinda forcefully.
He knows not to beg at the table. If he smells spaghetti or something else he likes he makes it known.
Dog Food is not good for dogs. Grains and cereals is not something their digestive tract is designed to handle and they have lots of gas when they eat it because it is fermenting or rotting in their gut.
I don't give him a lot of it.
The reason they eat carrion and raw meat in the wild is because that is all their is.

We also give her dog a few bites of lean meat or veggies (unseasoned) after we are done eating. She is given her dog food at the same times we eat and then sits or lays quietly (not panting & drooling or begging) until we are finished. She then gets her "dessert". She doesn't like fruit, but if she did we would be willing to also give her bits of fruit also. Add onion and mushroom to the list of things your dog should not have.

So if people food is so bad for dogs why did Blacky out at work live 17 years with leftover scraps of peoples lunch? The current GSD is going on 12 years old with the same diet along with dog food. All dog food is is the stuff not fit for human consumption with some vitamins and filler. The Collies eat Dog food but get some left overs as well. As long as it's low salt low fat and avoid the foods that cause dogs problems. I do not see a problem with human food in moderation.
