Rudy took off yesterday morning and did not come home until after dark. Silly cat.
As soon as I walked into the house after working at the library, the stench hit me hard. Smelled like old skunk meets old tires. I thought it was hot plastic at first, and checked every electric connection in the great room, where the stench was concentrated. WLToo can't smell like he used to, so he didn't realize there was a serious problem. It took several hours before I finally located the source: Rudy.
No idea what he rubbed against, but it was all over him. Was much too late at night to try cleaning him off, so we just made sure he could not crawl under the covers with us. I put Mentholatum in my nostrils so I could sleep without smelling him, and it worked enough to get a fair amount of sleep.
Then this morning, I put him in the shower and bathed him. He cried a lot, occasionally tried to climb the glass doors, but mostly just sat and shook while I cleaned as much off him as I could before my back said "enough!" Used four towels to get him dry enough that he could finish the job, and then went around the house sniffing wherever he'd been, so I could clean the smelly residue off that spot.
He just joined me for a few minutes of serious petting, and he still smells a bit, but it's not so horrible now that we can't tolerate it. We have a serious pile of stinky laundry to clean out before the place is finally clean of that odor. Dang! With a party scheduled on Tuesday, we did NOT need this level of cleaning to get through. Sigh.
Anyway, break's over, back to cleaning. Later, y'all.
