We do have a kind of deer predator. It's a disease. Leoghaire's fawn from last year is dying in front of our eyes. She became skinny, despite the abundance of feed, and this morning was laying on our porch until WLToo walked outside. She managed to get up and walk between the house and garage, where he got a lot of photos to send to the game warden. We know it's not Chronic Wasting Disease, but we don't know what it is. Couldn't see her face, so I don't know if she's suffering from the same virus that killed Lassie, her grandmother. Poor thing probably has a matter of days left, unless something comes by and puts her out of her suffering.
Sister asked us to come see a stray cat that had just walked into her neighbor's house. Kitty had been reported on NextDoor over a month ago, looking for his people, but no one ever responded. Apparently, he had been going through neighbor's doggie door and helping himself, from the way he was perfectly comfortable in their house. We met him and he was as mellow as can be, skinny, unneutered, and very friendly. So yesterday, we brought him home. He was pretty chatty until I smelled poop, and then he got real quiet. I guess he'd been telling us he had to go.
When we got him into the RV, I saw it was really loose stool, so we sanitized the carrier and blanket and arranged to get him to the vet early this morning. WLToo and he spent a pleasant night in the RV.
At the vet, he got a full range of shots, checked out as not contagious with anything really bad, but he does have a dose of Coccidiosis and is under medication for the next week. After that, we'll schedule his neutering. Czarny's not likely to come into contact with Randolph poop, as the Litter Robot cleans everything out between cat uses. Vet said he's about 11 months old. He only weighs 8.9 lbs and is very long and long legged, so I'd say he's under-nourished. Well, he'll get good food here.
Sister suggested we name him Randolph, since he was wandering near Randolph Air Force Base. WLToo noted that he's long and lean and quiet, and likely scatted away from his former people, so he's now Randolph Scatt (after the AFB and the actor).
Czarny met him this morning. So far, they have confined themselves to loud catcalls. Randolph wandered around the house and decided the spare bedroom was just the place for a nap. Czarny was very unpleasantly surprised when he jumped up there for his midday nap, so we moved Randolph to the cloth recliner from our old Itasca, which Czarny doesn't much like. Randolph spent the afternoon asleep there -- after all the shots and that nasty liquid medicine, he's sore and feeling out of sorts.
I bought a new cat tower, so they'll both have high places to go, when they calm down.
Randolph seems to like pretty much everybody, like Alexander the Grrreat did. That means he's happy to have WLToo pet, hold and fuss over him (when he's not sore anymore), and Czarny can continue to have his dedicated human (me).
When he's feeling a bit more perky, I'll post a photo.
