Your experience with the local band brought back great memories for me. My dad was a piano/percussion trained musician. After WWII his focus turned to education as shrapnel in his hands limited his time playing. We had a marimba and snare drums in our basement and dad gave private lessons to students.
While he didn't join our local community orchestra on a regular basis, he did perform with them when they needed "special" additional musicians. The one I remember most is him playing tympani when they performed the 1812 Overture.
