I have been retired for 14 years now, but was in a partnership for 30 years. We had no corporations pushing everyone's buttons then. I hear the way things are now and it makes me shudder. Veterinary practices are extremely limited by association requirements as well as government requirements, making it very expensive to keep your doors open. Unless you are a specialist, you are limited on what you can legally do. I did surgery better than six hours a day, and saw appointments before, during, and after, keeping very busy. I couldn't see doing anything else. Let alone after hours calls. That is unheard of now. I tried to keep my pricing in check knowing how it was to be poor as a kid and trying to take care of pets. The way things are now, the young people starting out, either can't afford pets, or have them and can't afford to take good care of them. Students graduating from veterinary school now have school debts that are staggering. I am very glad that I retired when I did.
