Winnie I know it's not all of them, but your seeing the same effect Walmart had on smaller retailers being applied to other fields. Your in a large market, so it's a target for larger groups. It's one more good reason to avoid big cities.
The same thing is happening in most industries and businesses. And most of the kids getting out of college want to be in those cities for the shopping, restaurants, and social scenes, so they put themselves in some of the worst possible positions.
