I was fortunate on education, my parents footed the bill for 4 years of undergraduate school, and I paid the 4 years of vet school with savings (3 years between undergrad and vet school) and a loan for the last year. At that time the government had a health professions loan program, no interest for the first year then a VERY reasonable rate thereafter. I had it paid in five years.
If you do the financial analysis, I had 8 years of no income while in school. Add that lost income to the cost of the schooling, then the difference in income I would have gotten vs what I got as a vet. The comparison only makes it reasonable because I really liked what I did (most days), made a good living and had control over my future.
I suspect most of you see the $$$ paid at the vets office and see a huge income. You may not be aware of the HUGE overhead involved in operating a hospital. I'm not complaining, just offering another perspective.
Regarding the cost of education, I wish we had programs where the costs were covered in exchange for service after graduation, kind of like the GI bills where some schooling is covered after service in the military.
