Is the vet profession, changing for the worse

Probably something, I could have PM Dr Doug about, but thought I would throw it out there. I am a Chiropractor, I recently had the opportunity to treat a young Vet Doc. Her practice experience almost made me cry.

She seems to me, to be a very nice young women (Doc), who truly loves animals, and went into Vet practice for that reason.

She tells me, because of her student loan debt, and because Vet corporations, will outbid her on any practice, she and other young vets would attempt to buy, it is almost impossible for her to have her own practice.

The worst part was, she stated these corporation practices push unnecessary, procedures etc. Making her very uncomfortable.

But what really got me was she stated the amount of verbal abuse she was subjected to every day, from pet owners.

Is this common Dr Doug? Has the world changed so much that now it is deemed acceptable to verbally assault Vet Doc's?.

These stories, she told me, I would throw them (the patients) out on their ear, but she states, in these corporate practices, it is all about the bottom line, And these young new associate Vets are expected to take this kind of abuse and keep smiling.

Is this the new norm?

  • It sure feels like our MEDICAL doctors have gone the "corporate route" - but I guess I'm lucky enough to still have an independently-owned Vet facility. And who knows - maybe because they're not uptight, (with having bosses breathing down their necks) - their customers are too? Always seems like a pretty laid-back place, and I hope it stays that way :-)

So true, she should she about a partnership. Our vet office is local, but has I believe three Vets working together. Nothing unnecessary push on you.
Yes, while dealing with the public can be fun and enjoyable it can also suck!
I use to fly a lot for work, and abuse that ticket agents and gate agents for the airlines took was crazy at times.
This was especially true during weather delays and cancellations. It is amazing what jerks some people can turn into!
  • There is a lot of mental illness out there. Dealing with the public is no fun some days. Fortunately the normal still outnumber the sick ones. We would all be wise to live by the advice "Do unto others......" Best advice to the young Doc would be hang in there.
  • Unfortunately, it has been the "norm" for countless years. Not just veterinarians, but ANY person employed into public service occupations. I think, it's just becoming more noticeable by those of us who were brought up to respect others and treat others kindly.

Unfortunately, we are living with a very spoiled generation of people who feel they are entitled to act, behave, and do whatever they want, treat anyone any way they want, and everyone better get out of their way and bend over and kiss their A $$ es. But, one word directed toward them that is somehow politically incorrect and they are ready to come after YOU with a law suit or worse!

There was a time folks kept their mouths shut and simply protested with their non-support of a business if they got service that did not meet their expectations. Today, they just bark with their entitlements and unfortunately, the poor public servant has to take the abuse. It isn't right, but it is the way it is.

That's why I show no sympathy to redneck morons that think they are entitled to stomp all over me! And thank God above I'm not working in a public service occupation any more!

My Vets office are fantastic. Everyone just loves those folks. I thinks they're a little (well, ok ... a lot!!!) expensive! But they do good service! We're always thankful and appreciate them.

Can you just imagine how abused auto mechanics are! (Or worse ... RV repair service folks!)
