In the past, that's what I've done and it's worked fairly well. But there seem to be newish fireworks that sound like a war zone. They don't just make the usual noises, they actually rattle the windows and shake the furniture and sound like a bomb - all at the same relative time.
When Ben arrived at our home in June as a pup, we knew we had to accustom him to fireworks. He made it through the 4th fireworks without a hitch. Then THREE FREAKIN' WEEKS after the 4th, at 11 PM, I had both dogs outside for a potty break, and some MORON shot a huge mortar round that went off a couple of doors down - I could feel the concussion in my chest. Ben *screamed*, he was so frightened - and that imprinted solidly in his little brain. Ever since, it has been hard work to erase that damage done.
Stuff that powerful shouldn't even be legal. Of course, many of us find burn holes in our boat covers (or if the boat wasn't covered - burns in the furniture) and we get to pick up all the cr@p out of our yards and beaches....
Most of those big mortars are illegal unless you're licensed by the ATF to work with explosives. Problem is lack of interest by the Sheriff who needs to get reelected or the prosecutor who also has to worry about reelection.
Locking a drunkard up for a fireworks violation is a lot of bad press.
At least that's my take on why so many "get away" with the big boomers.
From what I've seen in my area, the noises aren't coming from illegal explosives but from legal fireworks. There are fewer and fewer of the visual display type fireworks and more and more of the noise only fireworks.
