Yeah, we have a bichon or a bichon mix (possibly with meerkat or opposum considering his overbite) that seems to think we are portable stepstools, too. He seems to have ADHD, goes into a greeting frenzy when we come back in from the mailbox, loves physical contact and slams himself up against us in bed at night. Frankly, his energy level gets on my nerves, but DH thinks he's the greatest thing on 4 legs.
You just described my Tiki to a T. He's not all that energetic indoors or out, but he does have these short bursts of frenzy where he'll run around madly and dance on his hind legs. And God help you if you're still in bed when he checks the bedroom. I have a tall four-poster rice bed, almost 4ft high. He's a little thing, but he can jump clear from the end of the bed to the pillows. BLAM! Right on top of you!
But most of the time, he just wants to curl up next to us on the couch. Tiki is just the most loving dog I've ever had. We rescued him about 10 months ago after he had spent most of the winter alone on the streets--he had lost about 60% of his body weight and was in really poor condition. The vet wasn't sure if he was even going to live. I think Tiki is truly grateful, but *I* am the one he saved. We lost our regal Standard Poodle in 2011 and I had been grieving for almost 2 years. This dog came along and needed so much care--my DD20 and I literally nursed him back from the brink of death over a period of 10 days. He shows me every day how much he loves me and couldn't live without me. :p Even my DH is in love with this dog!
