Near Salem Oregon - need a veterinarian recommendation ..

She is no longer grouchy, or seeking somewhere warm (we are in the night-time temps of 30-40 degrees outside). And no longer grouchy.

Already seeing her jump onto couch for her leash to be attached, whereas before she would put her front legs on the couch, then turn and look at us. So glad we opted to seek a vet and have her checked out to make sure there was nothing else happening ...

Thank you Forum for coming to our aid again as you have these past 7-8 years when we went from traveling with a German Shepherd to traveling/volunteering with a 9-lb Chi. You have been very supportive ...

We did have a big day yesterday after the vet appointment, with a trip into Salem (over 30 miles away), and kind of toured the city going from place to place, shop or store or café, and were again reminded how much we prefer smaller towns. BTW she has a car carrier in which she is buckled.

I call Rimadyl a "Miracle Drug"... at least it was for my 13 year old yellow lab...when off, he limped and couldn't jump on the couch, bed, etc. On Rimadyl, he was like a puppy. Give it a couple of weeks, but I bet you'll see a significant difference within a few days! Good luck! M

Liver and thyroid issues are both associated with behavior changes in that direction. So a blood panel would not be a bad idea in addition to a hands on exam.

If it is arthritis, I would recommend going the glucosamine route first. If/when that is not enough, the nsaids can be added. Nsaids have side effects for dogs just as they do for ppl.

Went by this afternoon and made an appointment for Wednesday a.m., last year we were in 20 degree weather, and she would walk when the temps got up to 40+ degree for a mile, and this year she hasn't wanted to walk more than a little ways up the trail and is complaining when the temps drop into the high 20s.
She is so cranky and sometimes is '*****y' and that is not like her. Really hope nothing is wrong beyond her being 9 yrs old .. will feel a lot better once she is checked by a vet and blood work, etc. is done to reassure me or we can do something about what is wrong.

On Edit : apparently cannot call her a "female dog" which she is .. oh oh.

Abiqua animal clinic in Silverton is owned by a friend of mine. While we lived in Oregon, we went to his clinic exclusively. He's a good, honest and down to earth vet with good people working for him. As for a barber shop, hit up Hubbard. Best one I've found in the willamette valley was James' Barbershop in Hubbard.
